@grouser: Willem van Oranje (Dillenburg, Germany, 24 April 1533 - Delft, 10 July 1584) is the Dutch father of the fatherland, and the founder of the House of Orange. The parents of Willem van Nassau (as he was actually called) were Willem van Nassau and Juliana van Stolberg. The surname of our King: Oranje Nassau. A very long time ago an ancestor of the King, Henry III of Nassau, married a lady from Breda. They then got the French principality Orange in their possession. A principality is an area where a prince is in charge. The Prince of Orange was associated with this principality. This title was hereditary. So he passed from father to son. When the son of Hendrik died he had no children, so the title ended up with his German cousin Willem van Nassau. From the resistance against politics and the heretic persecutions of Charles the Fifth and Philip a rebellion arose that led William van Oranje-Nassau.
